A Good Deal

A good deal, we Miller Farmers know one when we see one. And so when we came across these free blueberry bushes Madeleine was out of the stroller, and the bushes were in.

Snow Emergency!

Heavy snow! The city is shutting down! Toddler playgroup is canceled!

Seriously? Seriously.

Being from Buffalo and Syracuse, we didn't even bother to get out the snow brush for this one.

The New Farm

It may not be much to look at. It may not meet even one single person's definition of a farm. But here it, is the new Miller City Farm.

What do you mean "Where?"?

It's obvious. Under the hedge, just to the left of the fire hydrant.* There is a row marker at the grass-line, and today, 2/17, I've planted radishes. French Breakfast Radishes. "25 days to maturity" per the package, although I bet that's a bit optimistic--which is a mental state I don't share since it snowed last night.

Also, yesterday the 16th I started-indoors and under the lights-tomatoes, lettuce, garden cress, and some snap and sugar peas.

*This farm didn't exist a week ago. I didn't even know that we owned a fire hydrant until I trimmed the hedge back far enough to find it. And a soccer ball. And a place for our crops!

Ants

One of the tropical crops here on the Miller City Farm: a big pitcher on Nepenthes sanguina doing some pest control at the first house.

Sushi

Delete from Maddy's favorite sushi list: fried eel, avocado.

Add to the list: soy sauce, raw salmon, fake Krab, and fried whole real softshell crabs.

Spring?

I actually took this picture in January. With the trees blooming already I'm not sure if my time is better spent lamenting climate change, or planning for what will likely be a long-but dry-growing season.
